Tanglin Arts Studio (since 2005) focuses firstly on the development of self-esteem and confidence & secondly on technique also in a range of styles – ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip-hop and combination classes.  We work hard to instill a love of dance and fitness in all of our students. Location

We are located in Horsecity (close to Turf City).  Horsecity is a step closer to nature and a nice break from Singapore's crowded sidewalks.  It is home to a spa, Picotin restaurant, a yoga studio, karate, a music school and much more.  While you wait or after you exercise (yoga or gym or Brazilian cultural center in Horsecity), you can enjoy an espresso in a relaxing, traffic free environment.

About the Teachers/Staff

Ballet Mistress and Full Time Teacher, Courtney Helena, a native of New York City, trained on full scholarship at the School of American Ballet and Ballet Academy East as well as at Boston Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Kaatsbaan, Chautauqua,  American Ballet Theater, and the Limon Institute. Courtney attended LaGuardia High School for Performing Arts in Manhattan, and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Dance and Kinesiology from Indiana University where she graduated with Highest Distinction and studied with notable teachers including Violette Verdy and Micheal Vernon. 
Courtney has performed the works of George Balanchine, August Bournonville, Paul Taylor, José Limon, Martha Graham, and Isadora Duncan, among numerous other classical and modern choreographers. Courtney performed as a child with New York City Ballet and the Kirov Ballet. In addition, she has performed with Dances Patrelle, Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, and most recently with IsadoraNOW and Dance Visions NY, where she performed the repertoire of modern dance pioneer Isadora Duncan as well as contemporary choreography. In addition to dance, Courtney is a classically trained pianist as well as Pilates and Yoga instructor. She also loves to choreograph and has had her original choreography performed all over NYC. 
Courtney's teaching background ranges from working with very young children to older adults. She has taught ballet (basic beginner to advanced) at Indiana University Bloomington, American Youth Dance Theater, and Chelsea Piers. She has also given masterclasses in ballet technique and repetoire. In addition to ballet, Courtney has taught jazz, hip-hop, and creative movement. Courtney loves teaching and sharing her love of dance with students of all ages; She is very excited to be part of Tanglin Arts Studio!

 

Artistic Director and Full-Time Teacher, Heidi Fisher  began dancing at the age of 3 starting with ballet, but took dance more seriously from the age of 11 taking exams with disco freestyle with the International Dance Teachers Association. Also continuing studies in ballet, modern, jazz and latin american dancing. Heidi has entered many competitions throughout the UK and gained many trophies and certificates. At the age of 16 Heidi studied Performing Arts at college where she participated in shows and plays. Heidi continued studies at University and gained a degree in Performing Arts. After her studies Heidi went to France to work as a hostess and then went to Mallorca to perform in cabaret shows in hotels, these included Saturday Night Fever, Celtic Pride, Aligria. After returning from Mallorca, Heidi decided to gain teaching qualifications. After completing training and gaining a teaching qualification with the IDTA  Heidi has taught in schools around the UK as well as teaching classes for various dance schools. Heidi is also a qualified Zumba Instructor as well as having experience in Acting and Drama. Heidi looking forward working in Singapore!

 

Choreographer and Teacher, Philip Sobrielo is teaching Hip-hop and jazz.  He has several years experience in teaching dance in Singapore as well as all around the world.  He has won several competitions and comes up with the cutest choreography!  He has a unique style of teaching that is a hit!

 

Teacher, Michele Weatherill - Michele inherited her love of dance and performance from her mother, Janet Musgrave, Director and Examination Board Member of the Theatre Dance Faculty, FATD (Federal Association of Teachers of Dance, Australia), and Principal of Ultimate Dance school, Sydney.  Michele commenced her dance tuition as a toddler, made her stage debut at age 2 and her professional performing debut at age 7.  Michele studied Tap, Jazz, Ballet and Musical Theatre styles with Ultimate Dance, and trained in singing with Greg Crease.   
Michele is an Associate Member of FATD, completing her Elementary Teachers qualification in Tap, and Bar-To-Gold Star Performance Certification in Tap and Jazz.  She performed professionally for several years as a member of the Bruce Henries Dancers and the South Sydney Junior Rugby League Club Ballet performing with a range of Australian and International choreographers and entertainers.  She retired from professional performance to pursue her second career as a lawyer, while continuing to teach dance for the joy and life balance it provided.
 
Michele has 16 years teaching experience in tap, jazz and theatrical dance, preparing candidates for FATD Tap and Jazz examinations, choreographing group and solo routines for Eisteddfods and recitals, and performing in and stage managing numerous Concerts.  Michele served as Choreographer for the Sydney University Law Revue for 2 years.  She came out of retirement to perform with numerous former students in the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games in a tap piece choreographed by Dean Perry of Tap Dogs – the high point of her performing career.
 
Michele is excited to be teaching again and to share her love of tap and jazz, and belief in strong technique, with students at Tanglin Arts Studio. 

 

Teacher, Karrie Dene began dance at an early age and knew early on that a stage career was for her! She started to live her dream when she was accepted into "London Studio Centre", the England equivalent of New York Performing Arts college. Here she studied all aspects of dance, drama and musical theatre. She appeared in many musical productions, as well as acting roles as Belinda in "Daisy Pull It OFf" and Juliet in "Romeo and Juliet". Karrie obtained a Diploma in Performing Arts upon graduation, having reached Advanced levels in Ballet, Jazz and Tap dance. During her years at college Karrie was employed as a teacher for the junior associate school attached to the college, students ranged from ages 5-12 years old. After leaving college, she worked professionally as a dancer and model, in various productions and commercial work throughout Asia and continued to teach dance around the region. Upon arrival to Singapore, Karrie was employed by various establishments to choreograph for their in-house entertainment programs working with international and local bands. She also taught at Pre-school education facilities, introducing kids to music and dance. She is also head dancer and choreographer for an International Performing group that is based n Singapore and do shows across the region. Karrie is also a fully certified Polestar Pilates and Gyrotonic instructor.

 

Teacher, Kimberly Martin has been dancing since the age of 3. She has achieved advanced examinations with the Royal Academy of Dance and the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing in Ballet, Modern and Tap and attended her local dance school in Devon, UK until achieving a place at the Central School of Ballet in London as a senior associate before going on to full time vocational college at Northern Ballet School in Manchester. Whilst at Northern Ballet Kimberley performed in many shows including Swan Lake, Giselle and Nutcracker as ell as musicals such as Godspell and many variety performances. After serious injury Kimberley took a few years away from dance and specialized in Human Resources in the Banking and Finance industry in her new home, Sydney Australia. Over the last couple of years Kimberley has rediscovered her love of dance and studied the C.S.T.D syllabus in Australia before relocating to Singapore last year. Kimberley is currently studying with the Royal Academy of Dance to complete her Certificate in Ballet Teaching Sudies.

 

Teacher, Amulya Deepak has been dancing since the age of 5. Belonging to a family of artists, the lights of cinema crews were a part of Amulya's childhood. Her father, Dr. Srinath, is a famous movie star in India. It was on sets Amulya knew she was "born to dance". Amulya has learnt different forms of folk dances and western dances for the past 11 years and has been performing for the pas 10 yars and danced in a 12-person Bollywood dancing troupe that traveled around India. Amulya wants to spread the joy of dancing. As time has gone Bollywood Dancing has become one of the most popular dances for workouts for all ages by offering new routines during each session. She weaves in basic dance moves with intricate choreography while delivering a challenging yet refreshing and fun workout. She is also a certified Zumba trainer and has been actively teaching for the past 2 years. 

 

Studio Manager,  Katja Paus has been with us for a good while now and we are loving having her at Tanglin Arts Studio.  Katja’s background lies in hospitality management as well as accounting.  She has spent almost half of her life in Asia (India, Hong Kong, Singapore) with a long list of – mostly voluntary - jobs to her name.  Her two daughters enjoy dancing at Tanglin Arts Studio while the boy could not be convinced yet.  Any organizational or other questions, ask her, she’ll know.  It’s great to have her in the office. She is very caring towards all of our students and brings many wonderful ideas to the Studio.
